Participation of Prof. G. Kalogirou, Assoc. Prof. A. Tsakanikas and Dr. A. Protogerou in the IKY/EBEO Event: “Emerging Scientific and Technological Areas: Relationships with the New Needs of the Labor Market”

The State Scholarship Foundation (IKY) and the Laboratory of Industrial and Energy Economics organized the event on the theme: “Emerging Scientific and Technological Areas: Relationships with the New Needs of the Labor Market”, which took place on 22/1 at the National Research Foundation’s auditorium.

The keynote speaker of the event was George Washington University Professor Nikos Vonortas. The topic of the speech was: “Public Policy Challenges and Scientific Human Resource Dilemmas in the Knowledge Economy” and presented the global trends in employment and the way in which technological developments affect them.

As part of the event, a round table was organized on the topic “Overview of new scientific and technological trends and their role in the innovative ecosystem of the Knowledge Society” and was coordinated by Angelos Tsakanikas. The round table was attended by, among others, Emilia Protogerou, who spoke about the prospects and challenges faced by doctoral holders in their professional careers, and Yiannis Kalogirou, who referred to the importance of doctoral and postgraduate studies in general in the knowledge economy.

Speech by Professor Yannis Kalogirou at the Conference “Micro-dynamics, Catching-Up and Global Value Chains”, Bocconi University, Milan, 20-22 November 2019

Professor Yiannis Kalogirou and Dr. Panagiotis Panagiotopoulos (EBEO/NTUA) participated in the Conference on “Micro-dynamics, Catching-Up and Global Value Chains” in the context of the European research project CatChain (“Catching–Up along the Global Value Chain: Models, Determinants and Policy Implications in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution”), which was held on 20-22 November 2019 at Bocconi University in Milan.

The Conference was attended by several distinguished researchers in the fields of evolutionary economics, innovation economics and international economics, such as Bengt-Åke Lundvall (Aalborg University), Keun Lee (Seoul National University), Franco Malerba (Bocconi University), Nicholas Vonortas (The George Washington University), Gary Gereffi (Duke University), Sunil Mani (Centre for Development Studies), Carlo Pietrobelli (University Roma Tre), Yiannis Kalogirou (National Technical University of Athens), Maria Savona (University of Sussex), Mammo Muchie (Tshwane University of Technology) and Jeffrey Orozco (National University of Costa Rica). Also, young and more experienced researchers presented their research work on the issues of Global Value Chains and their relationship with the development and innovative activity of both businesses and economies as a whole, and especially of developing countries. The Conference included thematic sections focused on specific geographical regions (Latin America, Brazil, Asia and Africa) as well as more general thematic sections.

Yiannis Kalogirou gave a speech in the last section of the Conference (“Final Reflections on Catching-Up, Global Value Chain and Innovation Systems”) which was also attended by Bengt-Åke Lundvall , Valentina Meliciani (Luiss Business School) and Franco Malerba (as Moderator). (see photos below)

NTUA Professor G. Kalogirou and Dr. P. Panagiotopoulos attended as guest speakers at this year’s InSysPo Innovation Seminar, which took place on June 25, 2019 in Campinas, Brazil. The subject of the presentations by the two NTUA researchers was “Economic Catch Up and Leapfrogging in the era of 4IR: Is a capability based view and an innovation led development path suitable and feasible for a peripheral European country?” with Professor G. Kalogirou presenting on the case of Greece under the title “The case of Greece in the aftermath of a long and deep crisis“, while Dr. P. Panagiotopoulos presented on the dynamic capabilities of Greek public authorities and specifically municipalities under the title “The role of dynamic capabilities in promoting effectiveness and efficiency in public organisations: The case of Greek municipalities“.
