Businesses are at the heart of innovation production in an economy. Their ability to conduct innovative activities, to interact with the external environment by detecting and exploiting new business opportunities, and to develop the necessary knowledge that is incorporated into new products or processes is an important feature of any national innovation system. But which businesses in our country are called upon to play this role?

The establishment of a spin-off company, known as a spin-off, is considered common practice in universities and research organizations throughout the advanced world. The aim of these companies is to utilize and maximize the economic benefits of the knowledge created within universities and research centers. Spin-offs are one of the tools with which Intellectual Property rights are bridged with production, in order for knowledge to be utilized in the productive fabric.
On the occasion of the tribute to the Region of Macedonia, this note presents the results of an interesting field survey conducted by IOBE and EVEO on behalf of SEV, in approximately 1,000 industrial enterprises in the country. Of course, the survey was conducted in 2018 and therefore concerns the period before the pandemic crisis.
However, its data are interesting because they concern structural issues of the industry and give an insight into the strategic identity of the region.

Greece excels in innovative research programs. The DiaNEOsis study “Research and Innovation in 2021 Greece” shows that for the past 36 years, the country ranks among the top ten in EU research programs participation. The Greek production model, on the other hand, lacks innovations and technological progress. Greek researchers may produce a plethora of high-level scientific publications, but they rarely lead to new product patents. Although there is a small core of dynamic, extroverted and innovative companies, most Greek companies procure and use technology as a “ready-made commodity” the study notes. How is that possible? The DiaNEOsis study tries to shed light into the Greek paradox and highlight the immense opportunities the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) could offer to the Greek entrepreneurship
