Smart Cities Event, 14/10/2016
On Friday, October 14, 2016 at 6:00 PM, an event was held at the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Hub of Technopolis of the Municipality of Athens, INNOVATHENS, to present the work and plan the next steps of the Smart Cities Consortium. The “Consortium” is made up of the Municipalities of Athens, Thessaloniki and Heraklion Crete, the INFOSTRAG research group of the Industrial and Energy Economics Laboratory (LIEE) of the National Technical University of Athens, the Open Technologies Organization – EELLAK, the Association of Greek Mobile Application Companies (SEKEE) and the Association of Mobile Telephony Companies (EEKT).
Smart cities are part of the broader plan of Western societies for the transition to a knowledge society and economy. They describe environments that enhance human creativity, learning and innovation capabilities. They are created by the integration of systems in a local community (Municipality, Region) that automate interactions between end users (citizens, institutions) and applications of a networked ecosystem.
In the first section of the event, each member of the “consortium” presented the actions that have been taken to date according to “commitment-7948”, while in the second section, the planning for the next six months for each member was presented.
The detailed program of the event was:
18:00 Introductory Speeches
18:10 Open Technologies Organization – EELLAK
18:20 Municipality of Athens
18:30 Municipality of Thessaloniki (Presentation)
18:40 Municipality of Heraklion (Presentation)
18:50 INFOSTRAG Research Group of the Industrial and Energy Economics Laboratory (EVEO) of NTUA (Presentation)
19:00 Association of Mobile Application Companies of Greece (SEKEE) (Presentation)
19:10 Association of Mobile Telephony Companies (EEKT) (Presentation)
19:20 Planning of future actions

The Energy and Industrial Economics Laboratory (LIEE) of NTUA participated in the DRUID 2016 20th Anniversary Conference held at CBS in Copenhagen from 13 to 15 June 2016.
DRUID (Danish Research Unit for Industrial Dynamics) was established in 1995 by CBS, AAU and SDU, with the aim of promoting the visibility of innovation and entrepreneurship research in Denmark. Today, the annual DRUID conference is one of the largest European management conferences, rivaling only the Academy of Management in the US, attracting leading innovation and entrepreneurship researchers from around the world. The 2016 conference was attended by 350 researchers from 35 countries with main research interests in management, economics and sociology, with a focus on innovation and entrepreneurship. Within this framework, topics such as open innovation, entrepreneurship, creativity, research and development, scientific knowledge production, global innovation networks, as well as institutional, social and eco-innovation were presented.
Specifically, from the LIEE/NTUA, the following participated: Giannis Kalogirou, NTUA Professor, Angelos Tsakanikas, NTUA Assistant Professor, and Emilia Protogerou, PhD in Engineering and researcher at the LIEE/NTUA as commentators of the papers published and presented at the DRUID 16th conference, but they also presented two papers with the following titles: “Dynamic capabilities in young entrepreneurial ventures: Evidence from Europe” (paper) and “Industry-University R&D Collaboration and Innovative Performance of Greek Manufacturing Firms in Times of Crisis: Do Interactions of Knowledge Flows and Knowledge Stocks Matter?“ (paper), respectively.
You can see the conference program here.
The Laboratory of Industrial and Energy Economics of the National Technical University of Athens (EBEO NTUA) participated in the 2016 Eu-SPRI Conference, which was held at CIRCLE, Lund University, from June 7 to 10, 2016.
The Eu-SPRI conference aimed to create a community of researchers active in the field of research and innovation and to foster interaction and exchange of views both among researchers themselves and between researchers and policymakers.
Specifically, participants included Yannis Caloghirou, Professor at NTUA, and Aimilia Protogerou, PhD engineer and researcher at EBEO NTUA, who presented on “Why enhancing resources and capabilities of newly-established firms can lead to superior innovative performance? Implications for innovation and entrepreneurship policy.”
